Vaginismus Symptoms

Recurrent or persistent involuntary spasm of the musculature of the outer third of the vagina that interferes with sexual intercourse.

The disturbance causes marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.

The disturbance is not better accounted for by an alternative psychiatric disorder disorder (e.g., Somatization Disorder) and is not due exclusively to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

Note: This disorder has been renamed and combined with another female sexual disorder in the updated (2013) DSM-5, and exists here now for historical/informational purposes only. (see Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder).
